| This was a two or three day trip that Terry Mahoney and I took to these Hittite sites, in late spring or early summer of 1966. I remember leaving the site a bit late and having to hike about 10 kilometers to the highway along a very small and lonely road on a pitch black night. At one point we were challanged by a vicious sheep dog with an iron spiked color around its neck and I literally thought it was the last night of my life. Eventually it left us alone and we continued and we say a single light criss-crossing in the distance and couldn't figure out what it was. As we got closer, we saw it was a tractor plowing a field and the farmer stopped to visit with us and offer us some food. We continued and finally got to the highway about 11pm and there was one building with a rudimentary restaurant where we ate some tas kebab among a number of others waiting for the bus. The bus came around midnight and we all got onboard for the trip back to Ankara (I think it was only about 3 or 4 hours). When we arrived it was still dark and very early morning and we made our way to our homes. |
